The industrial belt of Surat, where a majority of textile process-houses and chemical industries are situated, is facing a grim health situation. There are continuous reports of people being diagnosed with wrong medicine which further complicates their health.

The nearest properly functioning hospitals are at least 25 kilometers away from this location. Unfortunately, most of the income of the workers living in this industrial area is drained in trying to maintain decent health.

In order to help these workers and their families maintain a sound and healthy life, “Vardan Foundation” (Smt. Savitridevi Kishanlal Marwari Charitable Trust) along with Sustainable Livelihood Initiative India (SLII) Pvt. Ltd. have tied up with Central Government of India’s Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) to start Employer’s Utilization Hospital at Kadodara, Surat (center of the industrial belt). The hospital has come up under ESIC’s Modified Employer’s Utilization Dispensary (MEUD) Scheme and is called ESIC-MEUD ‘Vardan’ Hospital.

All activities including OPDs, IPDs, Medicines, Labs etc. are completely free whereas lab reports and medicines are given at a subsidy of 20-50%. The subsidy charges are borne by Vardan Foundation.

There are two functional OPDs, five IPDs, ANM services, full-fledged clinical laboratory and pharmacy. A 15 bed general ward and operation theatres are coming up soon. Specialist Doctors visit the hospital on a periodic-planned basis.

The patients are majorly from Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Lower Income Groups (LIG) but also comprise of economically marginalized farmers and traders from the villages and gram-panchayats nearby.

This is an absolutely non-profit permanent undertaking. Saving the lives of as many people as possible is the sole aim.
